It appears that Kontinental Hockey League superstar Ilya Kovalchuk has made a decision, and frankly it’s a disappointing one.
National Hockey League insider Larry Brooks of the New York Post is now reporting that Kovalchuk will be returning to the KHL for one more season, and instead will look to make his return next year when he will be an unrestricted free-agent. Brooks is claiming that the New Jersey Devils attempted to get a deal done but could not make it materialize. However Russian hockey expert Igor Eronko is reporting that the high demands from the Devils are the reason Kovalchuk is now contemplating a return to the KHL. According to Eronko the decision is not yet “100%” but it does sound like that is the way things are leaning at this time, supporting the report from Brooks.
Kovalchuk will return to KHL for one more season, Post has learned. Will become free agent next 7/1. Am told NJ made effort to make deal.
